A Message from the Executive Director - Agency Name Change
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to share with you news regarding legislation that was just signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy. As we approach our 30th anniversary as a state agency, the Juvenile Justice Commission is undergoing a name change to the Youth Justice Commission.
Substituting the word youth for juvenile in our name may seem, on the surface, like a small change, but it carries significance. Think about it: when you hear the word “juvenile,” what comes to mind? The words we use matter. For instance, no parent refers to their own child as a “juvenile.” It’s a term associated with a legal status, and so it has become a negative label.
But we want the youth in our care to aspire to be all that they can be. We want to help empower young people to overcome their past transgressions, to heal harm, and to take advantage of growth opportunities that put them on a path for a better future. Those better futures in turn create safer and stronger communities. This action to change our agency’s name reflects our belief in young people’s limitless potential and in second chances.
I am thankful for the action taken by the Governor and Legislature and for the support of Attorney General Platkin. Their partnership on this shared journey to continue to transform New Jersey’s youth justice system is deeply appreciated. Together, we remain committed to leading the way for reform, proving the youth justice system can make smarter, fairer decisions about youth and provide meaningful opportunities that lift youth up, all while protecting public safety.
We will begin to use our new agency name immediately, and you will see updates to our public-facing materials over time.
As always, I am thankful for the hard work and dedication of each and every one of you as we continue to forge a path that sparks long-lasting, tangible changes that ensure all young people in New Jersey have the best chance for positive life outcomes.
Very truly yours,
Dr. Jennifer LeBaron
