Mandatory Legal Standards 3-6-Hour Course

The NJ Division of Consumer Affairs, requires that all L/CADCs complete a 3 or 6-hour continuing education course in Legal Standards pertaining to alcohol and drug counseling in NJ during the initial biennial period pursuant to N.J.A.C. 13:34C-5.2(d). This course provides an overview of changes in laws and regulations including the Uniform Enforcement Act and continuing education. In addition, participants will review regulations related to clinical supervision and telehealth. The course will also address clinical areas of practice such as confidentiality and duty to warn. Participants will review elements of professional conduct including working within the scope of practice, sexual misconduct and harassment as well as self-reporting. This course also focuses on clinical documentation including electronic health records. 

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish between statutes and regulations that inform the scope of practice for L/CADCs.
  • Discuss the NJ Uniform Enforcement Act
  • Outline Duty to Warn, Protect, and Report statutes in NJ
  • Summarize telehealth regulations in NJ
  • Discuss updates in clinical supervision

This course is approved by APCBNJ for 3-6 renewal CE’s for NJ LCSW, LSW, LPC, LAC, LMFT, LAMFT, LCADC, CADC, LPAT & LAAT. 

Behavioral Health Matters, LLC is recognized by the NY State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0443.

Please check with your respective Licensing Board if your credential is not listed here and/or verify your Board's requirements.

The Legal Standards course is open to other NJ credentials:

  • Course provides an overview of the NJ Uniform Enforcement Act, Telehealth updates, etc. so this course may be taken by individuals with other credentials issued by the Board of Social Work Examiners as well as the Board of Marriage & Family Therapy Examiners toward general/clinical CEs as per course approval.
  • If your Board does NOT require the Legal Standards course you may register for either the 3-hour or 6-hour version.
  • This course DOES NOT satisfy CE requirements for Ethics for any credential.
  • If you are an L/CADC and not sure which version you are required to attend, please reach out so we can provide guidance.

About the 6-hour course:

  • L/CADCs required to take the 6-hour version will attend the full day 9:30A-4:30P.
  • L/CADCs who did not complete the 6-hour course during the last renewal period would register for this one.
